For the first time in history, the number of hungry people around the world has reached one billion says the United Nations Food and Agriculture agency, FAO. By 2050, experts believe the world population might rise to over 9 billion people, and the world will have to grow 70% more food to feed everyone, in an environment where the climate changes are becoming more and more unpredictable. FAO therefore organized a Summit this week in hope that world leaders would commit to raise the amount of global aid money that goes to agriculture. The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon took the stand to say regardless of the progress made, the threat to life is still very real.

Removing landmines in Asia with progressive methods

Landmine contamination remains a sad reality in many parts of Asia. However, ahead of the Second Review Conference of the Anti-Personnel Landmines Convention, the UN Mine Action Service says innovative efforts to remove mines on the continent are bearing fruit. Kit Cockburn reports:
