Secretary-General tells Parliamentarians to protect the economically vulnerable

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is asking Parliamentarians to do their part to make sure the recovery from the global economic crisis is inclusive and helps the poor, who are most affected.

He addressed the annual Parliamentary Hearing at the United Nations, organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the IPU.

Mr. Ban says there is an urgent need to increase the volume, quality and reliability of aid flows, as this is central to a coordinated global recovery plan.

"Your voice and vote will be vital - particularly in keeping our commitments to the most vulnerable people. In past economic crises, development assistance has been cut at the very time it is most needed. The global recession cannot be an excuse to abandon pledges."

Mr. Ban also called for Green growth investments, which would generate enormous benefits for development, as well as the planet.
