The deputy head of UNICEF Hilde Johnson, has called for more action to be taken in Southern Sudan to prevent the current severe food shortages from developing into a full blown crisis.

Ms Johnson who has just concluded a three-day visit to Southern Sudan says food shortages caused by poor rains have been made worse by increased levels of insecurity in the region, particularly in Jonglei State.

She says everybody should do their best to address the humanitarian emergency, which is already affecting 1.5 million people across the region.

She welcomed the immediate response of the World Food Programme, to the problem, but also called on donors and the Government of Southern Sudan to increase their assistance.

During her trip, Johnson visited therapeutic feeding centres and saw for herself the impact of food shortages on mothers and severely malnourished children.
