Red Cross calls for support to people displaced by conflict within countries

The International Committee of the Red Cross has called for more action to assist and protect people displaced by conflict within their own countries.

In a report launched in Geneva on Thursday, the Red Cross points out that most of the displaced people don't end in camps but are taken in by host families.

The report argues that these people are often the most vulnerable as they rely on the support of host communities that may already be extremely poor.

It says the challenge is to help not only the displaced but also the people who take them in.

The Red Cross estimates that conflicts have displaced 26 million people who endure extreme hardship, including direct attacks, ill-treatment, sexual violence and the loss of their property and livelihoods.
