Red Cross and Crescent helps fight dengue fever in Cape Verde

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is supporting its affiliate in Cape Verde to respond to a severe outbreak of haemorrhagic dengue fever.

Red Cross responds to dengue fever outbreak in Cape Verde

Five people have died of the disease which is transmitted by mosquitoes.

The agency says that there are 13,000 suspected cases, around 3,000 cases have been confirmed and 25 people are suspected to have the contracted the disease.

According to IFRC, this is the biggest dengue fever epidemic ever registered in West Africa and the first to affect Cape Verde.

IFRC says financial support will be provided to the Cape Verde Red Cross Society shortly through the IFRC Disaster Relief Emergency Fund.
