Secretary-General welcomes agreement on power-sharing in Madagascar
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has welcomed the agreement reached by Malagasy leaders in Addis Ababa, over the weekend, to establish a power-sharing administration.
The Secretary-General urges the Malagasy leaders to speedily inaugurate the government of National Unity and to put in place the transitional institutions foreseen in the Maputo agreements.
The Maputo Political Agreement of 9 August commits the signatories to form a government of national unity following turmoil and political violence in the country.
But since the pact was struck, the parties had not been able to agree on who should be president, vice-president and prime minister in any transitional government.
On Saturday the ousted President Marc Ravalomanana, the current President Andry Rajoelina, as well as former presidents Didier Ratsiraka and Albert Zafy signed the power-sharing accord.
The Secretary-General says the United Nations will continue to support Madagascar throughout the transition and beyond.
He says the world body will also work closely with the Joint Mediation Team on Madagascar, chaired by former President Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique.
