WFP chief applauds China-Africa cooperation to meet food needs
The head of the World Food Programme (WFP) Josette Sheeran has applauded the declaration by the China-African Forum on Food Security adopted in Sharm el-Sheik Egypt.
In a statement issued on Monday, she says the declaration underlines the important role that investment in food security, agriculture and infrastructure plays in meeting the food needs of Africans.
She points out that WFP has worked for decades to help people in China and Africa access the food they need to live healthy, productive lives.
Ms Sheeran says the agency helped farmers feed their families while supporting them as they improve their land, dig wells and build roads, clinics and schools.
The WFP executive Director adds that in the midst of humanitarian emergencies, her agency has also rebuilt roads, ports and airstrips to reduce the cost of delivering humanitarian aid.
She says China's own success in addressing malnutrition and bolstering food security shows that hunger can be beaten in a generation, especially when small farmers are given access to credit and markets.
