The Secretary-General addressed staff in New York and shared what he knew about the terrorist attacks in Kabul of 28th October. He expressed gratitude for the courage of the security officers who fought off the attackers and saved many lives. The wife of one of the five UN staff members killed shared memories of him. The Secretary-General paid tribute to the men and women in Afghanistan, who continue to work under very difficult circumstances.

The United Nations is pulling out some of its expatriate staff and is preparing to suspend long term development work in the areas along the Afghan border because of increasing insecurity and targeted attacks against its personnel. 11 United Nations personnel have been killed in Pakistan this year, including last month's attack on the World Food Programme's Islamabad office by a suicide bomber. UN Radio's Diane Bailey spoke to Susan Manuel, who was working as the Spokesperson for the United Nations Office at the time. She reflects on the violence that day and how it has affected their operations in the country.
