UN to tackle issues of Internet access and governance
Issues of access, diversity and security will be the focus of the fourth meeting of the UN's Internet Governance Forum scheduled to begin November 15th in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.
Marcus Kummer, Executive Coordinator of the IGF says under the theme of creating opportunities for all the meeting will highlight the interconnectedness of the challenges many face in gaining access to Internet technologies.
"We cannot talk about security without at the same time talking about freedom of expression or privacy issues. These are linked issues. It's a question of balances. The same for access and diversity. Technical access is one thing but diversity also needs to be respected, because people only have access to the Internet when they have access in their own language."
Mr. Kummer says the purpose of the four-day meeting is to develop a common understanding of how to maximize Internet opportunities for all nations and how to address the risks and challenges while also raising awareness of Internet governance.
