Rains pound Kenya while some parts suffer from prolonged drought

While most of the country continues to suffer from the effects of a prolonged drought, torrential rainfall pounding parts of Kenya is causing concern.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, (OCHA), says the rainfall has serious consequences for the people of Kenya.

OCHA says an estimated 4,600 people living in Kenya's northeastern region and along its eastern coast have been displaced and forced to seek shelter in schools as well as in the homes of host families.

Local authorities with support from the United Nations Children's Fund have chlorinated wells that were contaminated with flood water in one area.

There are concerns that up to 750,000 people in Kenya may be affected by flooding and landslides from enhanced rains caused by the El Nino weather phenomenon during the months of October, November, and December.
