UN mission in Liberia foils attempted jail break in Monrovia
The UN Mission in Liberia, (UNMIL), reports that it has successfully foiled an attempted jail break in Monrovia's Central Prison.
According to UNMIL the attempted escape happened on Sunday after one inmate reportedly managed to grab a set of keys from a correction officer and locked the officer inside a cell.
Fifty inmates then managed to escape from the cell into the main prison yard.
However, the UN Mission's Jordanian Formed Police Unit and some officers of the Liberian National Police intercepted the inmates at the main prison gate.
The mission says several warning shots were fired in the air to prevent the inmates from escaping and in the process, some of the inmates, ten Jordanian officers and one corrections officer sustained minor injuries.
None of the inmates escaped.
