Suriname says the current global economic and financial crisis has put a strain on the enjoyment of human rights
Human rights is one of life's ever-present realities, whether it relates to basic human needs, including the rights to food and shelter, or to quality of life such as access to education, freedom of expression or a life free from torture or persecution. That's what Suriname's representative Ambassador Henry Mc Donald told the General Assembly's Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee during discussion on the Promotion and protection of human rights. Speaking on behalf of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Ambassador Mc. Donald pointed to decreasing levels of revenues, especially in the tourism, mining, and financial services sectors.

The international community is confronted by many challenges. And according to Guyana's delegate Donnette Critchlow, the financial and economic crisis, issues concerning agriculture and food security and climate change have all impacted states of the Caribbean region.
