New initiative launched to improve supply of life-saving medicines in crisis
The World Health Organization has launched a new initiative to train medical personnel to better handle vaccines, anti-virals and other drugs in humanitarian crises worldwide.
The agency says that in many crises around the world, tons of medicines are wasted due to improper handling. Many medicines are perishable and should be delivered within a temperature-controlled supply chain to ensure the quality of the drugs.
WHO and other partner organizations have endorsed a distance learning course called "Certification in Humanitarian Medical Logistics Practices" (MedLog), conducted by two institutes in the UK.
MedLog can be completed in six months. The training focuses on what is needed to operate the supply chain for medical items. Special emphasis is placed on preventing the introduction of counterfeit or substandard drugs to the supply chain.
