Make the world a better place, says Ban on UN's 64th birthday
A concert to pay tribute to peacekeepers will take place on Friday in celebration of United Nations Day observed on October 24 of every year.
The concert will include performances from artists like Angelique Kidjo, Lang Lang, the Grammy Award winning pianist, and Sudanese former child soldier turned rapper, Emmanuel Jal.
The United Nations was founded in 1945 after World War II by 51 countries committed to maintaining peace and security in the world. Today, the organization has grown to include 192 members, and has since taken on a wide range of global issues.
Ahead of the celebrations, Secretary General noted that people looked to the United Nations to defeat poverty and hunger, to keep the peace and to stand for human rights.
Mr. Ban Ki-moon cited some of the UN's achievements, from feeding over 100 million people to vaccinating 40% of the world's children.
On the issue of climate change, he added, the UN will strive to seal a just deal in December that will pave the way to a greener, more sustainable planet.
Mr. Ban says he is painfully aware of the gap between commitment and action but promised to redouble efforts on behalf of the vulnerable, the powerless and defenseless, asking people to unite to make the world a better place.
