Bangkok climate change talks conclude
Two weeks of climate change negotiations ended in Bangkok on Friday.
Yvo De Boer, the UN climate secretariat chief, stressed that "all the ingredients for success" at the upcoming climate change talks in Copenhagen "are on the table."
On Friday, De Boer told journalists about the "rapid progress" made in Bangkok, but added that some long-held differences still remain. He said it is urgent for governments to bridge these disconnections.
" The underlying spirit in this process remains constructive, but there is, as has been pointed out, this strong sense, this strong fear, that there is this attempt to on the one hand kill the Kyoto Protocol as it has been explicitly said in the plenary this morning by a number of countries, while at the same time there's not even something better in sight or on offer. And that is causing a great deal of dissatisfaction, especially amongst developing countries. "
World leaders will meet in Copenhagen, Denmark this December to "seal the deal" on a new climate change treaty to replace the Kyoto Protocol on greenhouse gas emissions.
The last round of negotiations before Copenhagen will be held November 2-6 in Barcelona, Spain.
