Secretary-General welcomes progress to establish government in Madagascar
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has welcomed the progress achieved in Madagascar towards the establishment of a Government of National Unity.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, he urges the Malagasy leaders to quickly conclude negotiations for the appointment of members of the transitional government.
He calls on the leaders to make the necessary concessions to ensure that the transitional process runs smoothly.
Mr. Ban says the United Nations will remain engaged in the mediation process through the Joint Mediation Team on Madagascar, chaired by former President Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique.
The Secretary-General says the United Nations is committed to support the full implementation of the Maputo agreements and a rapid return to constitutional order through credible elections.
Madagascar has been facing a political crisis since President Marc Ravalomanana was forced by the military to resign earlier this year and Andry Rajoelina became a new leader.
Southern African states prevented Mr. Rajoelina from addressing the General Assembly during this year's general debate contending that he came to power in a coup.
