UN Humanitarian Chief concerned as another storm approaches The Philippines

The UN Humanitarian Office is concerned that The Philippines will be slammed by another typhoon only days after torrential rains triggered the worst flooding in the country more than 40 years.

Typhoon Parma, with winds of up to 220 kilometres an hour, is projected to hit the north of the Philippines within the next 24 to 48 hours, Humanitarian Affairs coordinator John Holmes told journalists on Thursday.

"We are extremely concerned about what might happen from Typhoon Parma. Some 8.5 million people are in its path in The Philippines, and more than 100,000 live in coastal areas which could be the most affected."

Holmes says the typhoon could have a "serious impact" on people already affected by the deadly storm on September 26th, and on relief operations currently underway.

Nearly 300 people died in the aftermath of that storm, and more than two million now require humanitarian aid.

Mr. Holmes says a flash appeal for The Philippines will be launched next week.
