Somali's Minister of Gender says women's empowerment is critical to peace in Somalia
A Somali official believes there are signs of optimism in her country, agreeing with the assessment of the UN independent expert on human rights in Somalia.
But Dr. Fwasiya Mohamed Shekh, Somalia's Minister of Gender, Family Affairs and National Human Rights says the harmonization between Somalia's traditional system and the modern federal law remain a challenge for the Somali government. She says the key is striking a balance.
"A fair balance of the social, economic and cultural rights among the eligible majority and the minority social group of my country is the main tool to obtain a lasting sustainable political settlement of the long overdue political crisis."
Dr. Shekh calls the Somali woman is "the backbone" of the country. She says the social and economic empowerment of the Somali woman is critical in the country's security.
