- The United Nations General Assembly concluded its general debate this week at the ministerial level. The high-level debate, with presidents and prime ministers ended last Friday, but not without some drama as the grouping of Southern African states prevented de facto President Andry Rajoelina of Madagascar from addressing the General Assembly.



Red Cross gives aid to conflict victims in North Darfur

- The International Committee of the Red Cross is providing food to thousands of people affected by fighting in and around the Korma region in North Darfur, Sudan. Red Cross spokesperson in Khartoum, Saleh Dabbakeh, says the people are also receiving household items such as kitchen sets, tarpaulins, blankets, mats, soap, jerrycans and buckets.




World leaders take on tragedy of maternal deaths

- With half a million mothers dying in pregnancy or as they give birth, world leaders this month announced a $5 billion health care package to end this human tragedy. UN Radio's Diane Bailey reports on the initiative led by British Prime Minister Gordon Brown who calls these needless deaths a neglected tragedy.
