From the first day he took office, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon made the issue of climate change a priority. In visits to areas affected by global warming, he and his team saw firsthand the effects of climate change. Most recently, he traveled to China and Mongolia. The Secretary-General explained that he made the trip to emphasize the special responsibility of countries like China to lead the global fight against climate change, and to highlight what China is doing.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on why climate change is a human issue

During his time in China and Mongolia, Ban Ki-moon focused almost exclusively on the issue of climate change. As he tells UN Radio's Maoqi Li, he hopes in the lead-up to the Copenhagen climate conference in December that governments will agree to cut greenhouse gas emissions, adopt mitigation and adaptation measures and provide financial support to countries to enable them to undertake these mechanisms.

Preparations are underway for elections in Afghanistan

On August 20th Afghanistan will hold elections for President and provincial council members. This is the second time Afghans will go to the polls since the fall of the Taliban in 2001. Bissera Kostova prepared this report about practical preparations for the elections
