UN expert welcomes action to prevent child recruitment by Philippines armed group
The UN expert on children and armed conflict has welcomed the signing of an action plan against child recruitment by a separatist group in The Philippines.
The action plan sets concrete and time-bound steps to prevent the recruitment and use of children by The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), which is fighting for an independent home in the southern Philippines.
It also provides for any children who may be among MILF forces to be separated and reintegrated into civilian life.
Radhika Coomaraswamy, who is the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, says the signing of the action plan "shows that the protection of children is a priority beyond any political or other agenda."
