The global consensus achieved during the UN conference on the world financial crisis has helped shaped a defined role for the United Nations in dealing with the global financial and economic crisis.

Barbados' Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance Darcy Boyce called for strong resolve and clear foresight to ensure that they bequeath to future generations the foundations for lasting prosperity and security.

Jamaica said the financial crisis occurred at an inauspicious period. Deputy Prime minister and Minister of Foreign Trade Kenneth Baugh noted that only a few months ago, developing countries were struggling to address the impacts of the food and fuel crisis. He said the 'triple tsunami' of the food, fuel and financial crises, in addition to the debilitating impacts of climate change, have only exacerbated an already precarious situation.

Trinidad and Tobago says many developing countries will continue to experience the negative effects of the crisis for an indeterminate period;

And Trinidad and Tobago said there is no denying the fact that the global economy is currently in the throes of an economic crisis. Its representative Ambassador Marina Valere said while there are early indications of a slwing of the global economic contraction, there is still uncertainty with respect to the timing and rate of economic recovery.

Secretary-General Ban in a message to CARICOM heads say the UN is aware of the significant impact of the economic and financial crisis on the region;
