United Nations forges ahead with supporting African Union in Somalia
A consignment of critically needed materials to support the African Union Mission in Somalia is on its way to the Kenyan port of Mombasa.
The head of the United Nations Department of Field Support, Susana Malcorra, told the Security Council that the United Nations is providing food rations, air support, fuel, sea freight and specialized training and support to the African Union mission known as AMISOM.
"Although a number of critical items have been moved by air already, the first significant UN consignment of support assets worth over $15 million is expected to arrive in Mombasa this week. These assets will provide essential capabilities to AMISOM in Mogadishu and include prefabricated buildings, medical equipment, workshops, sanitation systems, refrigeration units for food storage and armoured vehicles."
The head of the United Nations field support also said that work is continuing to strengthen the United Nations Support Office for AMISOM (UNSOA).
The AU mission has been in Somalia since 2007 to stabilize the situation of the country.
