Global economic crisis threatens anti-poverty efforts in Africa

- The global economic crisis is threatening to derail efforts to fight poverty in Africa. Falling commodity prices and the drying up of foreign aid is affecting Africa's progress towards eliminating poverty. As African countries lose revenue they are forced to cut spending on infrastructure, health, education, water and sanitation.
West Africa is used as transit point for trafficking
- West Africa is facing the problem of being used as a transit point for smuggling drugs into Europe and engaging in all sorts of illicit activities. To deal with this problem, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime and its partners have launched an initiative to strengthen the capacity of countries in the region to fight organized crime.
A centre improves public service delivery in South Africa
- The Centre for Public Service Innovation in South Africa is one of this year's winners of the UN Public Service Awards. Its Chief Executive Officer, Thuli Radebe says as citizens' needs become more sophisticated and complicated, it is crucial to find new ways of delivering services to the people.
