UNHCR in Iraq closes camp for Iranian Kurds refugees

The United Nations refugee agency in Iraq has announced that it has closed down a camp hosting Iranian Kurdish refugees in the no-man's land on the border between Iraq and Jordan.

UNHCR says the makeshift camp has been hosting the Iranian refugees since 2005. The Iraqi government had set last Sunday as the deadline for the relocation of the refugees.

More than 180 of the refugees have been relocated to Al Waleed refugee camp, which is already hosting 1,400 Palestinian refugees.

UNHCR hopes that the temporary relocation of the refugees to Al Waleed camp will enable it to provide them with basic needs such as food, water, a sewage system, a secured camp, a health centre and education.
