Speaking to reporters after the meeting Mr. Ban said he told the head of the military regime in Myanmar that the country's election should be credible, fair and inclusive.

"I urged and I argued for the release of political prisoners, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. And secondly, I also urged the early resumption of political dialogue, which is substantive and meaningful and more elevated level dialogue between the government and the opposition."

The Secretary-General has requested a meeting with opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been under house arrest in Yangon for much of the past two decades and is currently on trial for allegedly violating the terms of that arrest.
