Yukia Amano of Japan to be new Director-General of IAEA
The Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency is meeting in Vienna today to appoint Yukia Amano of Japan as the new Director-General of the IAEA.
The 35-member IAEA Board of Governors selected Ambassador Amano on Thursday out of three nominated candidates. The other two were Abdul Samad Minty of South Africa, and Luis Echávarri of Spain. Mr. Amano and Mr. Minty were the candidates in the final round of balloting, with Mr. Amano receiving the required two-thirds majority of votes cast.
Yukia Amano is Japan's Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Vienna. He has extensive experience in disarmament and nuclear energy policy.
Ambassador Amano will succeed Mohamed ElBaradei, whose third term as IAEA Director-General runs out on November 30th.
