The ILO gender equality at the heart of decent work campaign
The International Labour Organization, the ILO, celebrates its 90th anniversary this year. The organization shares its anniversary year, 1919, with the League of Nations, the precursor to the United Nations. One way the ILO is observing this milestone is through the "Gender Equality at the Heart of Decent Work Campaign," a kind of teaching tool the ILO developed to better inform people of the work it does.
Supporting victims of sexual violence in conflict
Rape and other forms of sexual violence are some of the ugly realities of conflict. UNIFEM this week held a two-day colloquium to support implementation of Security Council Resolution 1820, the first UN resolution to acknowledge the use of sexual violence in conflict as a deliberate tactic of war.
Making economic stimulus packages work for women
Women in the Asia-Pacific region make up the majority of temporary and low-skilled workers, according to UNIFEM, the UN Development Fund for Women. Noeleen Heyzer, former head of UNIFEM and now Executive Secretary of ESCAP, the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, is concerned about the fate of these women in light of the on-going global economic and financial crisis, and in an interview, spoke to Gerry Adams about how social protection can help them.
