Humanitarian agencies say access is major challenge in Pakistan

UN agencies in Pakistan are pushing to get access to all the displaced in the northwest of the country who need assistance, says UN Humanitarian Coordinator for the country Martin Mogwanja.

He says while the agencies are working hard to assist all of those who are in need, they have a long way to go.

Mr. Mogwanja warns that the most vulnerable - including women, children, the disabled and the elderly - are often the hardest to reach and relief workers have to redouble their efforts where these groups are concerned.

He points out that agencies are trying to improve access to goods, services and information for the disabled, the injured, the sick, women and the elderly without family support as well as minority groups.

Relief agencies say the funding situation remains critical, with only 36 percent of the over $500 million Humanitarian Response Plan funded.
