UN chief urges an end to force in Iran
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is calling for an immediate end to the arrests, threats and use of force in Iran.
On Monday, the Secretary-General urged the Government and the opposition to resolve their differences peacefully through dialogue and legal means.
The Secretary-General said he had been following with growing concern the situation in the Islamic Republic of Iran and is dismayed by the post-election violence, particularly the use of force against civilians, which has led to the loss of life and injuries.
Mr. Ban called on the authorities to respect fundamental civil and political rights, especially the freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and freedom of information. The Secretary-General reiterated his hope that the democratic will of the people of Iran would be fully respected.
