Jamaica says poverty and hunger will never be eradicated if the creation of wealth is pursued at the expense of social justice
The world will never advance to the extent it can, poverty and hunger will never be eradicated and peace and stability will never be sustained, if the creation of wealth is pursued at the expense of social justice.
The warning comes from Jamaica's Prime Minister Bruce Golding in an address to the ILO, the International Labor Organization's Global Job Summit in Geneva. Golding says he supports the ILO's call for a global jobs pact, saying job creation is not an outcome of economic recovery. Rather, he adds, it is essential to economic recovery and the only sustainable way of stimulating the demand for goods and services.
The Bahamas says the rate of new HIV infections surpasses the growth of treatment programmes
Halting and reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS by 2015 require greater access to HIV prevention services and AIDS treatment, care and support than is currently available. The view was stressed by delegates in the General Assembly this week as they concluded a wide-ranging review of progress to date in fighting the pandemic. Discussion throughout the two-day meeting which heard nearly 50 government and other representatives, centred on successes in, and obstacles to, implementing the 2001 Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS and the follow-up Political Declaration of 2006. The representative of The Bahamas Ambassador Paulette Bethel recalled last year's high-level meeting in which note was taken of key achievements. These included a 47 per cent increase in 2007 in access to antiretroviral therapy and treatment, as well as a 33 per cent increase in access to services to HIV-infected pregnant women to prevent mother-to-child transmission.
