Militia attack disrupts UNICEF's work in central Somalia

Thousands of women and children in central Somalia risk missing out on life-saving humanitarian aid after militiamen looted a UNICEF compound.

UNICEF says the militiamen, who are fighting against forces from Somalia's Transitional Federal Government, took control of the town of Jowhar-and the UNICEF facilities-about a month ago.

The UNICEF compound included warehouses for nutritional feeding products, water and sanitation supplies, educational materials, and medicines and drugs. It also held vaccines in what is known as a "cold chain facility."
