Women in Delhi embrace the career of taxi drivers
Work is a dangerous business if you are poor, female, and live in India. Hundreds of millions of women there have jobs where there's a very high risk of accidents, assault, or getting sick from the conditions. This issue - of the right to work safely - is currently being highlighted by a global gender campaign, organized by the International Labour Organization - the UN agency dealing with workplace issues. It will be debated in June at an international conference in Geneva. In India, some women have decided to look for solutions themselves, and have found a way to escape that perilous world.....by taxi. Mandy Cunningham reports.
UNFPA promotes the use of female condoms
The buzz on female condoms is: it's noisy, it's ugly and it's expensive but it is still the safest contraceptive around. Female condoms have been around now for 16 years yet, according to experts at the United Nations Population Fund, there is only one female condom for every 200 male condoms distributed. When this contraceptive method came out, it was hailed by many as a powerful tool for women. Dr. Werner HAUG, Director of UNFPA's Technical Division, is still a big fan of the female condom and forces us to look at the harsh reality.
