- The World Food Programme warns that 17 million people in the Horn of Africa are facing another year of hunger as a result of a deadly mix of persistent drought, poor seasonal rains, conflict and the high cost of food. WFP spokesman Peter Smerdon says the people are finding it very difficult to survive.

- The UN Peacebuilding Commission this week held a special high-level session on helping Sierra Leone consolidate peace. UN Secretary-General says seven years after the end of the civil war, the people of Sierra Leone expect to see tangible improvements in their own lives and in their country's welfare.

- As Africa struggles to develop its agriculture in order to feed its growing population a UN Environment Programme expert is calling for subsidies and other forms of assistance and safety nets so that people have food. He says there can be no economic development without food security.
