Media reports indicate that the attack occurred during weekly Muslim prayers on Friday afternoon, a time when mosques are generally packed with worshippers.

A senior government official in Upper Dir is quoted as saying the suicide attacker managed to get into the mosque to detonate the bomb.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, the Secretary-General reiterates his rejection of such indiscriminate and reprehensible acts of violence.

He extends his condolences to the families of the victims and to the Government of Pakistan.
