Thousands of people walk on Sunday to end hunger

Thousands of people in some 70 countries are expected to join the World Food Programme and its major corporate partners in a walk against hunger on Sunday.

The annual "End Hunger: Walk the World" is aimed at raising both awareness and money to feed school children in some of the poorest countries in the world.

The United Nations food agency says the walk will begin in Australia with a climb up the Sydney Harbour Bridge and continue through 24 time zones.

The walk will be marked by pop concerts in Indonesia, traditional Maasai dances in Kenya and will conclude on the Pacific island of Samoa.

According to the World Food Programme, it costs just 20 Euro cents to provide a nutritious meal to a child at school.

Feeding programmes also give parents an extra incentive to keep their children in school and help to lay a healthy foundation for a better future for the young.
