International Peacekeepers Day celebrates the contributions of women to peacekeeping

May 29th was observed as the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says the UN has been pressing forward with intensive efforts not only to involve more local women in peacemaking and peace-building, but also to recruit more women into UN operations.

The United Nations Population Award honours an Egyptian doctor and a Nicaraguan non-governmental organization

The United Nations Population Award was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981. This year's laureates are a renowned Egyptian doctor, Mahmoud Fathalla and a Nicaraguan non-governmental organization, Movimiento Comunal Nicaraguense. UN Radio's Jocelyne Sambira reports.

The Special Rapporteur on violence against women submits her final report

Dr. Yakin Erturk is leaving the post she has held for the past six years, Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences. She announced her departure at the recent meeting of the Human Rights Council in Geneva. Her final report to the Council addressed the issue of the political economy of women's rights.
