Asia and the Financial Crisis: Lessons Learned
The General Assembly has scheduled a conference next month on the World Financial and Economic Crisis and its impact on Development with an aim to identify long term solutions to the crisis and discuss a restructure of the global financial system. Focusing on the Asia and Pacific region, Michael T. Clark, Senior Adviser to President Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann of the General Assembly, notes the region has learned a lot from its previous financial crisis.
Human Rights Council examines the situation after the conflict in Sri Lanka
The United Nations Human Rights Council opened a special session this week with a call from, Navi Pillay, Chief of Human Rights to set up an independent inquiry on violations committed in Sri Lanka. The President of the Council, Ambassador Martin Ihoeghian Uhomoibhi, recalling the ravages caused by two decades of conflict, noted that thousands of innocent lives have been wasted.
