Celebrating Astronomy: Rediscovering Our Place in the Universe
To celebrate the International Year of Astronomy, the International Astronomical Union and UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization are encouraging activities to help broaden our understanding of the universe. These include 100 Hours of Astronomy where people around the globe had the opportunity to observe the sky through telescope.
The experts say the study of astronomy gives us an understanding of our place in the universe. In this programme, astrophysicist Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, who heads the New York Planetarium, and others explain why everyone, this year and beyond, should glimpse the wonders of the heavens through a telescope.
