A survivor of the 1994 Rwanda genocide tells her story
Women: a weekly 14-minute news magazine that looks at issues affecting women around the world.
It's been 15 years since an incident in Rwanda changed the lives of all Rwandan citizens. On April 6, 1994, the Presidents of Rwanda, Juvenal Habyarimana, and Burundi, Cyprien Ntaryamira, were killed when their airplane was shot down near Kigali International Airport. The killings sparked the beginning of the Rwandan genocide, in which an estimated 800,000 people were killed. But there were also survivors and Marie Claudine is one of them. UN Radio's Derrick Mbatha caught up with her when the United Nations commemorated the anniversary this past April. She told him her story.
Women and migration: a view from the Caribbean
In order to commemorate Women's Month, which takes place in March each year, FLACSO, Facultad Latinoamerica de Ciencias Sociales, OIM, the International Organization for Migration and INSTRAW, the UN Gender, Migration and Development Project, held a meeting in Santo Domingo with a special focus on women's migration from the Caribbean. Bridget Wooding was one of the participants.
There's good news for women in Afghanistan
They are among the main beneficiaries of a dairy project put together by the Food and Agriculture Organization, FAO. With its beginnings in four Afghan provinces, the project has been so successful that the 1,600 farm families taking part have seen their incomes increase five times, from $130 to $650 a year. Women do most of the work so they keep 95 percent of the money. UN Radio's Dianne Penn spoke to the FAO Representative in Afghanistan, Tekeste G. Tekie.
