Displaced civilians in Sri Lanka

Fighting between Sri Lankan government forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, or the LTTE, has trapped tens of thousands of civilians in a tiny sliver of land in the northeast of the country.

Representatives of NGOs are urging the UN Security Council to put Sri Lanka on its agenda as part of the organization's "responsibility to protect". Nimmi Gowrinathan, an American citizen of Tamil origin and one of the NGOs calling for UN action, told me why she's particularly concerned about women.

The state of emergency prohibits both local and foreign media from reporting news that might put the military and police in a bad light. I spoke to Sharon Baghwan Rolls, coordinator of FemlinkPacific, about what that means for her community radio that has as a priority reaching out to women in rural areas.
