Piracy disrupts shipping off the coast of Somalia
UN and Africa - a weekly 15-minute radio programme on political, social, economic and other developments related to Africa.
- The rescue last Sunday of an American captain in a high profile-hijack once again highlighted the problem of piracy to shipping in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Somalia. The World Food Programme says it is concerned about piracy because large quantities of food destined for Kenya go through that route.
There is progress in drafting an arms trade treaty
- Negotiations on an arms trade treaty to control the sale of weapons which are used for criminal activities in Africa, including piracy, continue. In part two of the interview with UN Radio, Joseph Dube of the International Action Network on Small Arms says African countries are committed to controlling the flow of arms to the continent
UN envoy sees hope for future of Guinea Bissau
- As Guinea Bissau recovers from assassinations of two leaders in March, the UN envoy in the country, Joseph Mutaboba says the situation is calm. He says the people of the tiny West African country have the will to build a better future and need international support.
