Engaging men and boys in gender equality
Women: a weekly 14-minute news magazine that looks at issues affecting women around the world.
The first Global Symposium on Engaging Men and Boys in Gender Equality drew more than 450 representatives from 80 countries to Rio de Janeiro. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon addressed the conference in a video message. This theme was also addressed during the recent annual session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York. We hear from two participants from Kenya.
Ensuring women's reproductive rights is good for the economy
An increasing number of governments are recognizing the importance of guaranteeing the right of women and men to choose the number and timing of their children and of providing them with the information and means to do so. This became apparent during last week's meeting of the UN Commission on Population and Development in New York, where participants examined the links between slowing population growth and achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals, especially those on poverty reduction.
Condoms are an important component of HIV prevention
The World Health Organization, WHO, supports a combination of approaches to prevent the sexual transmission of HIV, including correct and consistent condom use, reduction in the number of sexual partners, HIV testing and counselling, and male circumcision. WHO's Veronica Riemer explores the effectiveness of condom use in this report.
