In October 2006, the Secretary-General of the United Nations launched a study on this "intolerable scourge," as it has been described, and identified concrete ways to address it.

If you are a woman living in a developing country, the International Agency for Research on Cancer of the World Health Organization has encouraging news for you concerning cervical cancer. An eight-year study conducted in India with 132 thousand women found that when women who were routinely screened for cervical cancer using a Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) test, were 50 percent less likely to contract cervical cancer.

Yemen is facing a number of development challenges. The poverty rate runs about 40 percent. The illiteracy rate is 52 percent. And for women it's over 70 percent. When a woman tries to find a job, she faces severe pressure to conform to traditional roles women and men have in this society.
