Secretary-General urges global action against drug trafficking and terrorism stemming from Afghanistan
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is urging nations to combat terrorism, illicit drug trafficking and organized crime stemming from Afghanistan.
Addressing a conference in Moscow convened by the Shanghai Cooperation Organization on Friday, he said these problems thrive in an atmosphere of lawlessness and corruption and are seriously impeding progress for the Afghan people. But Mr. Ban pointed out that the harm of terrorism and criminality transcends borders.
"Most of the drugs produced in Afghanistan are smuggled to foreign markets ... and foreign banks launder the proceeds of these crimes. We therefore have a shared responsibility to deal with this problem."
Ahead of the International Conference on Afghanistan in The Hague next week, Mr. Ban called for a judicious deployment of additional international troops to improve security for the Afghan people.
