Exhibit to commemorate victims of slavery opens at UN

UN and Africa - a weekly 15-minute radio programme on political, social, economic and other developments related to Africa.

- The UN commemorates the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery under the theme "Break the Silence, Beat the Drum". An exhibit of drums from Cameroon opened at the Visitors Lobby. The exhibit includes a more than 200-year-old drum that was made during the transatlantic slave trade.

- As the United Nations remembers the victims of slavery, the Chairman of the African Group says the drum is a reminder of the agony, pain and suffering of a people separated but together in rhythm, song, dance and movement. The representative of the Caribbean says there must be a permanent monument to slavery at the United Nations.

- Senegalese-American hip-hop star, Akon, says there is need to speak and educate people about slavery and mobilize to make sure it does not happen again. In his view there is subliminal slavery going on and minorities are still unable to occupy certain positions.
