Stakes at upcoming G-20 Summit are large: Ban
The stakes at the upcoming G-20 Summit in London are large.
That's what Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told an informal meeting of the General Assembly Monday while briefing on his upcoming travels and listening to the views of UN members.
The Secretary-General says he has sent a letter to all G-20 leaders, urging them to show leadership in four areas: providing a substantial and truly global stimulus package that also meets the needs of all developing countries; standing firm against protectionism; moving towards a "Green New Deal"; and reforming global rules and institutions.
On other matters of international concern, the Secretary-General expressed his continuing concerns about the expulsions of 13 international non-governmental organizations from Sudan. He told the assembly that, in the aftermath of the decision, the United Nations and the Government of Sudan agreed to undertake a series of joint rapid assessments in the three Darfur states.
He said the results of those assessments indicate significant gaps, explaining that capacity on the ground is insufficient to sustain relief assistance in the short or medium term.
