AU/UN panel recommends funding for Africa's peace efforts

- The Security Council on Wednesday discussed cooperation between the African Union and the United Nations in promoting peace in Africa. A report by a joint panel of both organizations recommends that the UN approves assessed contributions by member states to finance Africa's efforts to resolve conflicts and restore peace.

Zimbabweans continue to suffer from cholera and hunger

- United Nations agencies are continuing their efforts to fight cholera and hunger in Zimbabwe where the disease has killed more than 4,000 people. UN Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator, Catherine Bragg who recently led a mission to the country, says the challenge is to reach the people in the periphery.

- As the world grapples with the current economic crisis, there is optimism in some quarters that Africa might avoid the looming recession. However, a recent report by the International Labour Organization warns that African economies will suffer serious damage as a result of the economic crisis.
