- The political crisis in Madagascar has taken another turn with a leader of mutinous soldiers declaring himself head of the army. Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Haile Menkerios says the crackdown on the opposition in Antananarivo last week has precipitated a change in the army's position of neutrality.
UN and government send teams to assess needs in Darfur
- The United Nations is continuing to assess the impact of the Sudanese authorities ordering non-governmental organizations to stop their operations in Northern Sudan, including Darfur. On Wednesday a joint UN-Government technical assessment mission started to evaluate the food, water, health and emergency shelter situations in Darfur.
Swazi woman activist sues government over property rights
- As the UN Commission on the Status of Women holds its session in New York, an activist lawyer from Swaziland tells UN Radio about women's struggle for equal rights in her country. Doo Aphane of the Lutheran Development Service is suing the government for the right to own property as a woman.
