International Women's Day is marked at the United Nations
Women: a weekly 14-minute news magazine that looks at issues affecting women around the world
As the United Nations marks the International Day of Women, usually observed on March 8th, it is highlighting the responsibility of men and women to end violence against women and girls. The theme ties in with the Secretary-General's wider campaign "UNiTE to End Violence against Women," which he launched in 2008, to run through 2015, the target date for achieving the Millennium Development Goals.
An interview with Niemat Ahmadi of Darfur Sudan
On March 4th, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued a warrant for the arrest of President Omar al-Bashir of Sudan. He was charged with crimes against humanity and war crimes, including intentionally directing attacks against the civilian population. Niemat Ahmadi is one of the civilians in whose name the warrant was issued. She is a native of North Darfur, a long time human rights activist and founder of the Darfuri Leaders Network, a group that advocates for a sustainable solution to the crisis. UN Radio's Derrick Mbatha interviewed Ms. Ahmadi and first asked her what she'd like to see happen now that the International Criminal Court has taken this decision.
Women and Sport
The International Working Group on Women and Sport (IWG) was established in 1994 at the 1st World Conference on Women and Sport held in Brighton, Australia. The vision of the IWG is to realize a sustainable sporting culture that enables and values the full involvement of women in every aspect of sport. During the annual meeting of the Commission on the Status of Women, Carole Oglesby, Vice Chair of the IWG, spoke to UN Radio's Matthew Graham about what motivates women to be more active.
